Legal Excerpts

Taken from “Legal Research and Writing”, Foundation Press, 2006 p. x

Why would anyone want to write like a lawyer!?

My text states : By now, you may be asking yourself, “Why would I want to write like a lawyer? Lawyers are terrible writers!”

It continues to talk about how the common perception is that language is used by lawyers to hide the meaning of things in legal documents and to generally confuse everyone.

My textbook begins it’s response by stating: “The root causes of the basic complaints of prolixity, excessive complexity, and dishonesty or obfuscation are many and varied, but the problems can be targeted and eliminated.”

Heh.

  1. Yep, they do it to themselves. Lawyers want to continue being essential in modern life, so they make themselves essential by making the legal code such a mess they’re the only ones who can claim to know how it works. I suggest we dump everything but the Constitution and start over from there, no lawyers allowed. Engineers? Fine. Farmers? Ideal. Military? Yep. Straight, direct language that anyone with a solid high school education can understand.

  3. Just passing along some happiness…. But seriously, lawyers are a self-licking icecream cone. I’d rather see you as a lawyer and doing what you want, than anything else. Besides, you might bring some sanity to the system.
